… unique designs for tabletop gaming scales …
I had previously completed a “scale down” to 1/270 of two of my “V” ships for Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures gaming use when I received a request to scale down another ship to 1/350. Whereas I had identified the obvious use of my models for X-Wing gaming at 1/270, this request made me realize that there were some really cool potential extensions of this idea – – – let’s face it, there is lots more to tabletop gaming than just X-wing.
The immediate thought that came to mind was Armada. I used to play Battletech when I was quite a bit (wink, wink) younger but I haven’t thought about those things in years. So, I started doing a bit of research and working to move some of my models to Armada. In the process of doing that, I stumbled across Firestorm Armada and some others, like Planetfall. My interest was piqued, so now I’m evaluating the options – looking for a strategic way to incorporate the more unique designs into applications in the different “universes”.
Part of this I expect to reach into will be suitable accessories and possibly even upgrade and other play cards. This is a future path – for now I’m focused on scales and crossover applications.
This all sounds nice, but scale is a big issue. How does it work? How do you decide what scale is appropriate for what “universe”? How do we integrate smaller vessels and larger vessels without conflict? These are all great questions and I’m working on answers to them so I can move forward. I plan to start with a basic concept and then extend it as needed for the different “universes”.
I’ve found some really good analysis of scales published – and some really poor ones. I’m trying to take the best of all the concepts and create a method that I’m comfortable with and that people will enjoy. With respect to scale, I consider my tabletop gaming work to be unique from all my other projects – realizing that the standard single application scale value isn’t going to work in these “universes” for gaming.
If you’re interested in how I’m evaluating scale and choosing scaling methods, I’m posting some of my thoughts on my Tabletop Gaming Scales page.
I’ll be posting my completed designs in the appropriate sections under Completed Worx and some future development work will be showing up in Progressing Worx. Your feedback on scales and tabletop gaming applications is always appreciated – just use my Contax form!
